Travel information

Air

The International Airport in Balice, located about 15 km from the centre of Krakow, has direct connections to major cities in Europe. There are also numerous connections via Warsaw and some other Polish airports. If You arrive to Krakow by plane, the most comfortable way to get from the Balice airport to city center and hotels located there, is to take a taxi from the parking outside the terminal building. The ride will cost about 15 - 20 €. Tourist rip-offs are rare but have been reported, so we recommend that you should take taxi 19661. Drivers on this taxi line speak English and you may pay with your credit card in each of their taxis. Much cheaper but a little bit less comfortable way to get to the city center is to take a train from the airport. You can get to the railway station taking a bus from the outside of the terminal or take a 5 min. walk following arrows signs. You may buy tickets from the ticket inspector on the train.

Land

Krakow has direct international railway connections with Berlin, Bratislava, Bucharest, Dresden, Frankfurt, Kiev, Odessa, Prague and Vienna, and via Warsaw and other Polish towns with major cities throughout Europe. If you get to Krakow by train, you will be in the city center, just when you get off the train. Most of the hotels are located close to the station, but you can take a taxi as well to get anywhere you want. Taxi stop is situated on the top floor of the station, and you have to go upstairs to the roof. Remember to choose taxis from chains like: 19661, 19191, 19621, 19622, 19623, 19625, 19626, 19628, 19629, 19663, 19664, 19665, 19666, 19669, and 19688 - they are recognizable by the numbers on the side door. There are also many inexpensive bus lines between Krakow and main European cities.

Transport in Krakow

Taxis

Except during the busy nights before weekend and bank holidays, taxis can be found very easily. There are several taxi stands, for example at the airport, on the railway station, on Slawkowska street, on Szczepanski square and on Wszystkich Swiętych square. Of course you may call for a taxi using, for example, the 19661 phone number.

Public transport

There is no metro in Krakow, but you can get almost everywhere by bus or by tram. A single ride costs 2,50 pln which is about 0,75 €. You can as well buy the 72 hour ticket which is cheaper.

Meals

Coffee and tea during cofee breaks and lunches are included in the registration fee. For dinner there are restaurants within walking distance of the Conference site. When you go to the a restaurant always remember to check if you may pay with credit card. It is also important to ask in advance when you want to pay separately. If you would like to try traditional Polish cuisine You should go to Babcia Malina's restaurant in sw. Jana street or Szpitalna street, U Stasi in Mikolajska street or Koko in Golebia street, which is open till very late at night, so you can get there warm dinner even after midnight. All those places are rather cheap but we can recommend it as pretty good places to eat. For more exclusive polish cuisine you should try Pod Aniołami in Grodzka street. If you are a vegetarian, you can eat in Vega bar in sw. Gertrudy street or in Krupnicza street or you may choose the salad bar Chimera in sw. Anny street. We can also recommend Momo bar in Dietla street, you may eat there Indian dishes and some Asian specialties.

Weather

The weather in Krakow in early June is mostly sunny, with average temperatures around +23.0°C (73.4°F), and precipitation around 58 mm.

Safety

Krakow is relatively safe city and is referred as such. Reports of crime involving violence are very rare and thus it is almost always safe for both men and women to be anywhere in Krakow, even at night. However, incidents of petty crime such as pocket-picking and the thefts of wallets, purses, handbags, coats, cameras and mobiles are relatively frequent, especially in tourism season. It is therefore advisable to take the usual precautions such as zipping up one's bags, keeping handbags close to the body, not leaving belongings unattended in restaurants, bars and public places and so forth. In restaurants, never leave your bag on the back of the chair. Special care should be taken in busy and tourism areas.
