In 1954, by the resolution of communist Cabinet, the Faculty of Theology was expelled from the university. Remaining under the supervision of the Vatican, owing to the efforts of Cardinal Karol Wojtyła (the Archbishop of Kraków and future Pope John Paul II) the faculty received the honourable title of "Pontifical" in 1974 and was established as an Academy in 1981. In February 2010, the Pontifical Academy of Theology in Cracow was given the official name of the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Cracow. The University conducts its scholarly and didactic activity at five Faculties: of Theology, Philosophy, History and Cultural Heritage, Social Sciences and one located in another city - Theology Faculty in Tarnów - and also at many Interfaculty Institutes.
